Building on the successful delivery of the Wokfresh project and our relationship with the University of Birmingham, Seddon was appointed to undertake the refurbishment and fit-out of the 1st and 2nd floors of the Metallurgy and Materials Building.
Works comprised of the complete strip out of the two floors of the building, then the creation of multiple classrooms and specialist robotics laboratory in two phases.
Each floor received new mechanical and electrical installations for equipment, full furnishing and decoration.
The existing concrete within the building required minor repairs before putting up new internal glazed partitions to created individual study rooms within the laboratory, ceilings and doors. Our Health and Safety SHEQ team worked closely with the University’s Health and Safety team to ensure the safety of all and in order to keep accidents to a minimum.
The team faced challenges such as a short lead-in time and access to the building was only through front curtain walling. Our site team worked closely with the client and the project was completed to a high standard. The laboratory has provided students with a modern, flexible workspace and a more suitable teaching space for the university.
The project was completed within the ‘live’ environment, and as such the programme was developed to ensure the Seddon site team delivered the project safely and without disruption to the university’s timetable.
The programme was successfully managed through regular communication with the university’s representatives, ensuring that both parties were informed of any key events or milestones, and works planned around these.
This ongoing positive engagement with the university and the Seddon delivery team also enabled client variations to be incorporated within the programme of work, without any extensions of time or delays.
