Wigan Council has taken a new approach to developing specialised housing for their residents with Dementia. As part of the programme, we were appointed to undertake the demolition of the existing single-storey, Stone House Community Centre, to create a three-storey block of 12 supported apartments, for their residents.
Scope of works included the demolition of the existing community centre, full drainage of the site, laying foundations, brickwork and build and car park works.
During works, an archaeologist exposed the basements and foundations of the previous building, Leigh’s first maternity facility, dating back to 1850. These were recorded and drawn up by the Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service.
Cllr Keith Cunliffe, deputy leader of the council, said about the scheme: “We know having the right home has a direct impact on someone’s health and wellbeing and their quality of life.
"Ultimately having the right home, which meets your needs, means you can live a longer, happier and healthier life.
“We want to keep people independent in their own homes but also connect them into a local community which is why these schemes are brilliant and they can help to tackle social isolation.”
