The works at Tameside Hospital included the remodelling of the existing physiotherapy unit to create a new fractures department and GP lead unit to create a new modern, welcoming space. Works were undertaken in two phases as the hospital remained fully operational.
The unit is now used by some of the 250,000 people the hospital serves and will hopefully lower the waiting times for patients, whilst improving the overall capacity and atmosphere of the hospital. The works within the fractures unit consisted of new M&E installation, including new nurse call and panic alarms to all clinics and GP rooms, acoustic stud walls and complete redecoration.
The GP led clinics received a complete redecoration within the existing space, two new IPS units with sinks, along with one of the clinic rooms being split into two to create a ‘dirty utility room’ and a small kitchen. A new entrance was created, including a bespoke reception area and the installation of LED lighting.
The team faced tight time constraints as the fractures clinic, which had originally been part of the first phase was completely redesigned following commencement on site. Consequently, all work completed to date had to be taken down and reworked to fit the revised design. To accommodate these changes the team worked out of hours and over weekends to achieve the works to the agreed timescales, whilst still achieving the highest level of quality.
The works were undertaken within a live environment. Constant communication was maintained with the project manager to ensure any deliveries were undertaken without risk and with minimal congestion maintaining specific delivery times. The site was secured with the appropriate site set up to ensure segregation from the staff, patients and public.
