Following the recent merger between Trafford and Stockport College, the newly formed Trafford College Group wished to redevelop their Wellington Road Campus (Stockport) in order that the existing campus will provide a modern connected learning environment, one which will attract new students and allow the college to operate more efficiently.
The works were split into two phases to ensure minimal disruption to the staff and students.
Phase 1 of works include:
Vernon Tower: Architectural refurbishment of the existing building including replacing the suspended ceilings, internal decoration and new flooring to the ground floor. In addition, replacement of all MEP infrastructure within Vernon Tower with builders work in connection and making good.
Vernon Arts / Workshops: Refurbishment to the existing steel frame and installation of a Metsec system for the envelope. A new roof structure made from steel and the construction of a new internal mezzanine.
Link Corridor: Construction of courtyard infill building between Vernon Arts and Vernon Tower, including link corridor to a new mezzanine in Vernon Arts.
External Works: Allowing for a tarmac surface around the two above named buildings to allow for safe access to the buildings.
Other works include installation of new services:
A new plant room to the back of Vernon Arts for all incoming services such as electric, water, gas, telecoms etc including the construction of a new plant room to the rear of Vernon Workshop. All services will come into the new plant room and will be fed out into the campus.
The works were undertaken on the live college campus and were also adjacent to another construction project for a developer. Careful management of logistics and programme were required to maintain student safeguarding and ensured completion in advance of the start of the new academic year.
Phase 2 of the works:
Phase 2 of the redevelopment was a 3000m2 three storey new general and vocational teaching building constructed alongside the A6. The new building will create additional hair and beauty, laboratory, and cafe areas for the students to enhance their learning. Working within strict timescales, the team ensured the successful completion of the project by Christmas to allow occupation in January, whilst also incorporating a significant number of changes during the project.
