The University of Derby appointed Seddon to upgrade the existing auditorium with a capacity of 160 students to create a more modern and suitable teaching space. We worked as the design team, alongside specialist contractors to deliver the works.
The original seating and steel frame were removed, and the auditorium was split into two floors, holding 196 students in one and 160 in the other.
The tiered seating was replaced with new blue and maroon toned seating to match the Universities colours and the room was painted white with black accents and feature walls to give it a fresh, modern and clean feel.
Our team worked closely with the acoustic specialists who used a three-layer plasterboard system to line each auditorium prior to the multimedia systems being installed.
Both the ground floor and first-floor auditoriums are the first of their kind to use the finest pixel pitch ever to be utilised in a teaching environment.
The screens allow for varying layouts from multiple sources of media provided by the purpose build lecterns using a 4k network and control system.
The use of these screens along with the dual 10” subwoofers allows for a more dynamic, streamlined and progressive form of learning and would be the first of its kind within the University campus.
All works were planned around the live campus, access and egress routes along with hoarding were placed around the auditorium to allow for the movement of staff, students and visitors around the building.
