New modular classroom extension and internal refurbishment of existing buildings
Baskerville is a day and residential school for 149 secondary age students between 11 and 19 with autism and additional disability.
Seddon were appointed in early 2022 to create two single-storey modular extensions to an existing modular special needs teaching block. The new extensions would house three new classrooms and accompanying ancillary spaces. The works also included some refurbishment of the existing adjacent block.
Project details
The works required the creation of foundations for the two new modular classrooms as well as refurbishment of some of the existing school buildings and included the installation of a new SEN food tech teaching kitchen. The external works completed consisted of hard and soft landscaping, together with secure new perimeter fencing. We worked closely with the client and our trusted supply chain partners to deliver the project to a challenging timescale. All our site staff and operatives and those of our supply chain were all DBS checked.
Project challenges
The project presented us with several challenges over and above the familiar obstacle of working on a live school site. The project was awarded at short notice via direct award to enable early order of long lead time items. Works on site had to be carefully and accurately programmed to meet the tight timescales while accommodating the daily running of the school. We built in some weekend working to minimise term time impact and enable on-time delivery.
Badger sets were discovered on site early in the programme and this initially delayed the works. We worked closely with the appointed ecologists and the school to re-programme to ensure minimal delay and ensure all required teaching areas remained available and fully operational during project construction.
