WORK PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES, LIVERPOOL

The Benefits of work placement

Construction is a vital industry, creating buildings and spaces that connect communities, providing jobs and improving society. It is one of the largest contributors to the UK economy, adding almost £90 billion to the UK's economic output, comprised of over 280,000 businesses which collectively offer more than 2.9 million jobs. Few sectors have the same potential to provide such a vast number of high-skilled, well-paid jobs, and due to the crucial nature of this work, there is rarely a shortage of opportunities.

To inspire future industry talent, and to support more people into the construction industry to tackle skills shortages, Seddon provides several opportunities for people to explore possible career options. Work placements, for instance, are a fantastic way to give beginners of all ages an initial taste of the industry, providing a stepping stone into longer term work and training. Whilst qualifications are obviously important, gaining on-site experiencedemonstrates to a potential employer that learners can apply their knowledge in a practical environment, as well as developing other important skills, such as teamwork, reliability, and communication. It alsoenhances their potential in gaining employment as an apprentice on completion of the scheme, with potential employers getting to know a person before offering employment.

Gaining Experience

Seddon understands that the future of our profession is underpinned by the continued recruitment of high calibre, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals. Partnering with Liverpool City Council, Liverpool in Work Team who support hard to reach groups to secure employment, such as young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), Seddon recently facilitated two paid placements, taking place over 6 weeks at our Millstead and Palmerston SEN School sites in Liverpool.

Patrick Denson, aged 23, from Kensington, Liverpool is one of the placement attendees. Patrick has family members who have worked in construction and was inspired to work in a trade from an early age. After beginning a carpentry and joinery course in 2021, a change in family circumstances meant Patrick was unfortunately unable to start the second year of his course. His time away from the industry was only temporary, however, as Patrick soon began assisting his uncle with small construction projects, completing labouring and joinery tasks, which renewed his passion for his chosen vocation. In the hope of gaining more experience and increasing his employability, this was the perfect opportunity for Patrick to have some hands-on experience of working on a large-scale, live construction site, learning whilst earning. Patrick is currently discovering about what life is like working for Seddon, as well as gaining a better understanding of the standards that are expected from employees, and what can be achieved when you are dedicated and hard-working.His enthusiasm and confidence are vital in his learning, and we are delighted with the progress of Patrick's placement. Adding this experience to his CV will also make a crucial difference when seeking future employment. After completing the placement, Patrick plans to restart his college course and hopes the invaluable experience he has gained, as well the hard work he has contributed, will make a significant impression to his ultimate career aspirations. Keep up the good work Patrick!
