In January 2013, Seddon was awarded the construction of a new two-storey primary school, Scientia Academy as part of the framework.
The new school was designed to create a light, open environment with four interlocking blocks to provide space for 420 pupils. Built on the old Coors Brewery sports fields and Belvedere Park Bowls Club.
The facility includes two halls, 14 classrooms, a nursery, an ICT suite, and a ‘4D’ interactive learning space. Externally, it incorporates hard and soft play areas, a habitat area, sports pitches, a tennis court, a drop-off facility and car park provision.
Working closely with Staffordshire County Council and REAch2 Academy Trust, Seddon successfully delivered a truly unique school environment which will enhance learning experience of pupils and teachers. This has been achieved by creating flexible spaces which surround a central hub to provide opportunities for varied and small group teaching beyond the traditional class bases.
The project was designed using BIM (Revit) which accelerated the design process whilst pre-fabricated cross-laminated timber cassettes from a specialist supplier were incorporated to reduce the construction period.
The state-of-the-art facility coupled with a design that encompassed modern constructin methods has provided a valuable contribution to the local economy. The project was delivered within the client’s budget and on programme. It demonstrated a truly collaborative approach to delivery.
