Launch event for heavyweight refurbishment of Stoke-on-Trent boxing club

An amateur boxing club in Stoke-on-Trent has been refurbished as part of a construction industry drive to support local community groups.

Over the course of a week, a small team of decorators from Stoke-based contractor Seddon repainted the main hall of Queensberry Police Amateur Boxing Club and replaced its existing flooring.

The aim of the project was to enable the club to better raise its funds by renting out the space to other groups in the local community.

Seddon carried out the work free of charge, as part of its ongoing social value commitments as a delivery partner on the Scape Regional Construction framework, which enables the business to provide construction services on public sector projects up to a value of £750,000 in the North West Midlands area.

A key element of the Regional Construction framework is for partners to engage with community organisations on a voluntary basis, adding social value wherever possible. The club’s refurbishment needs were brought to Seddon’s attention by local supply chain partner, PM Training.

On Wednesday 29th May 2019, an official launch event was attended by the owner and young members of the boxing club, as well as Seddon’s construction services team and representatives from Scape Group and PM Training.

Andrew Price, operations director at Seddon, said: “We thrive off being able to give back to the areas in which we work across Staffordshire, the Midlands and beyond. We were thrilled to take on this vital refurbishment work and help this fantastic, community-run boxing club continue to support itself for many more years to come.”

Mark Robinson, Scape Group chief executive, said: “Social value is embedded at the heart of everything we do at Scape Group and is an intrinsic part of our frameworks. This fantastic initiative from Seddon demonstrates excellent levels of community collaboration, and it’s great to see the business championing innovative ways to ‘give back’ and meet the needs of the local community.”

Established in 1981, Queensberry Police Amateur Boxing Club is an England Boxing-affiliated club, providing training opportunities for young people in the area.
